Recipe for French Onion Soup

Here's the recipe for French Onion Soup:

Ingredients:

4 large onions

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

2 cups water

1/2 cup white wine (optional)

2 slices of stale bread

1 cup grated Gruyere or Emmental cheese

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Peel and slice the onions thinly.

In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and caramelized. This process may take around 30 minutes.

Once the onions are caramelized, pour in the white wine (if using) to deglaze the pot, scraping any browned bits from the bottom.

Add the chicken or vegetable broth and water to the pot. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and let the soup simmer for about 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

While the soup is simmering, preheat the oven to broil.

Toast the slices of bread until they are lightly browned and crispy.

Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of toasted bread on top of each bowl.

Sprinkle a generous amount of grated cheese over the bread in each bowl.

Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.

Remove the bowls from the oven using oven mitts or a towel, as they will be hot.

Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve the French Onion Soup hot and enjoy!

Note: Be careful when handling the hot bowls and be sure to let them cool slightly before eating. Enjoy your homemade French Onion Soup!
